Symptoms include trembling, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, sweating, nausea, dizziness, hyperventilation, and sensations of choking or smothering. I have had mild to severe panic attacks for about 10 years on and off. I go through periods, years, where I don't have any. The last few years they have been worse and I see a therapist, take 150mg of Effexor daily (have been for years) and PRN Xanax. I barely use the Xanax. I feel like I should start using it more often instead of suffering but my experience has always been when it gets bad enough, take a Xanax, go to sleep and wake up with it over with. The Xanax is a very low dose..but still puts me to sleep. I will stress for days about specific situations that will be taking place such as the holidays which are very hard for me. Should I be thinking about using the Xanax and staying awake during the day to not get so sick to stomach and panicky about the situations that haven't even happened? Just curious if anyone has any advice. This is my first post in the discussion since I joined about 2 wks ago. Thanks!

I take Xanax for my panic attacks throughout the day and it does wonders for me. They have me on a low dose too, about .25 mg and it's helpful during tough times... I would recommend it if you have it available to you.

Hi i am on Niravam that is exactly like xanax except it dissolves on your tongue and hits you in five min. Which is nice if you get paniccy you can feel relief right away instead of being on it every day or having to wait until it disolves in your stomach. Ask your doctor JJ

I was diagnosed with panic attack disorder about 10 years ago give or take. I have been on Celexa, Zoloft and on and off xanax. Xanax helped take the edge off but now I'm on Lexapro and hardly need the xanax.

if you are lucky enough to find an AD that works for your anxiety then you wont need much valium type meds at all

Hi Jennifer. I often cut my .25 Xanax in half and take one during the day if I feel a bit anxious. It calms me down and doesn't make me too sleepy. Mainly it keeps me from spiraling into a panic attack, kind of stops it in it's tracks before it really turns into a PA. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I do have .25mg and I try to only use when i really really need it but then I've trained myself to just go to sleep immediately after I take it. I want something that will help me enjoy some of the activities I want to attend and not feel like I'm just grinning and bearing it until it's over with :( My effexor does work somewhat but I have been on it for about 6 years and i don't know anymore if there is a significant difference that it makes.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
