So this is the first time I have tried a support group. I was diagnosed with pancreatitis back in march, and have been stumbling along on my own with very little help. For example, I have NO CLUE what to eat, what not to eat and how much to have. I tried researching this when I first came back from the hospital but couldn't find much. My doctors at the hospital weren't a whole lot of help. In fact they couldn't tell me what had caused this and generally seemed mystified on how to help me. Unfortunately I don't have any insurance and cannot afford to go see a doctor or specialist. So when I went for a follow up it was with a local place that took people without insurance for a fee of 45 dollars. Sort of like a helth department type of place. In any case the doctor I seen told me there was nothing to worry about. That once the 'episode' is over, I no longer have pancreatitis. He also told me I could drink all I wanted, smoke if I wanted to, and eat whatever I wanted. However, I notice that when I eat certain things I get terrible pains, and frequently bloating and gas pains. unfortunately this is not consistent. (For example, one night my boyfriend and I made lean turkey burgers for dinner. They had fat free cheese on them, and no mayo or anything like that, but shortly after we ate my stomach was clenched with so much pain I didn't know what to do with myself. But before this 'episode' I had had the same burgers, out of the same box, in the same way and experienced no ill side effects.) So I have definitely concluded that this doctor was wrong. I started asking my family questions. Apparently, my sister once had an acute pancreatitis attack, my grandmother had chronic pancreatitis for years, and my grandfather died from pancreatic cancer. These are just a few examples, but needless to say there is a long history of pancreas problems in my family. My question is, now what? What do I do? How do I prevent long term effects, and how worried should I really be??? Not to long ago I read an article that stated pancreatitis can lead to pancreatic cancer, internal bleeding and diabetes. Ever since reading this I've been terrified and lost. So PLEASE if anyone can help me I would GREATLY appreciate it!
