Both my dad and his dad died from this disease. So, I wondered if there was a genetic link. I mentioned this to a woman I met on this site who had a couple of family members also succumb to the disease. Her doctor had told her that there was no genetic link, yet it really does make you wonder...
Also, I wonder if there is a connection between alcoholism and pancreatic cancer. Both my dad and his dad had their struggles with alcoholism. I remember my dad's doctor kept repeatedly asking him how much he drank and how often.
Does anyone else have an opinion on the genetic question or if a secondary illness like alcoholism increases your chance of contracting the disease? I worry, because I am a recovering alcoholic myself. I wonder if I'm at risk for contracting it.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
It does appear to run in families, but so far there is no PROVEN link. There are a number of studies currently researching the possibility of a genetic link. They suspect that the BRCA2 mutation, which plays a role in the genetic type of breast cancer, might be involved in some way. If you google "pancreatic cancer genetic link" you will find a lot of info about this.
i have done a lot of research, and they basically say the same as everyone else does, diabetes, obesity, smoking, having a family member who had it, but i don't think there is just one cause of it..
also my dad was never much of a drinker or smoker, he worked out everyday so he was very healthy, so it just goes to show you that anyone can get it

Heavy alcohol use would have an impact on many of our body organs including our pancreas. I do not know what your risk level would be-as you have stopped drinking. I would consider it very small. I applaud your efforts.
There is a much higher risk factor for smoking and pancreatic cancer than use of alcohol.
Excess alcohol use can lead to pancreatitis-an inflamation of the pancreas. Those with a history of chronic pancreatitis have a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

They also asked me if I smoked. If you read up on any type of cancer you will find that everyone is born with cancer. but something happens somewhere and the cells become active.
