Okay, I admit, I don't know where to turn. My seven year old son was diagnosed at age five with ODD and takes concerta. The problem...his behavior before the drug kicks in and after the drug wears off (it lasts about seven hours). I believe the behavior is getting worse: violent, angry, inappropriate, etc. While the medication is in his system, he is an angel and has an above average IQ (reads at a 6th grade level). So, what's the problem you ask? I cannot control him during the "off" periods...he has physically hurt other children, broken numerous items by tossing them across the room, and extremely verbally abusive (uses swear words or words like "kill" "murder")...which is very disturbing when it comes from a seven year old. Teachers have no idea, because while at school, he is the perfect student...literally. Ideally, I'd love to have him get therapy, but we recently moved to another state and I do not have insurance. I think his disorder was inherited, since his father has serious, similar behavior problems, which is why we divorced. I'm curious to know if other parents believe the ODD was inherited and what behavior therapy you've tried. Does your child exhibit above average intelligence? And, what drugs have been successful? Does my story sound familiar?? I appreciate any comments.
