I've heard about the dangers of diet products over the years, but today I was forwarded an article about how Asptertame, when heated to over 86 degrees (as it is in you 98.6 degree body) turns into formaldahyde and cause a toxic reaction. This reaction is suppossed to mimic a lot of MS (and lupus) symptoms and is thought to be the reason for the increase in MS dx over the past few years.
Now, I've always known that the chemicals in food and drinks are not good for me, but being diabetic, my options for beverages are limited - not too much regular soda, even less juice, limited skim milk, etc. - so I've come to rely on Diet Pepsi for the caffiene and flavor.
I can post the article if people are interested in specifics, but I wondered if anyone had heard about this and/or what you think?
I guess my biggest question is, what about the lesions that are evident in my MRIs? Those, along with my optic neuritis are what prompted my dx, not so much the daily symptoms that I struggle with. Those all seems to kick in, or maybe it was that they became more noticable once I knew what they were, AFTER my dx last January.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

I drink quite a bit of diet soda, and when I first heard about this, I talked to my neuro and my MS specialist. They both told me it was not true. Some people are highly sensitive, and aspartame is certainly not good for you, but it will not cause my MS symptoms. Everything in moderation, and make the best choices for you. Thanks again and be well.-Jen
