My name is Tammye and my husband Emmitt is a quadriplegic with MRSA. He was thrown from a horse about 2 and half years ago and is paralyzed from his neck down. He was on the vent for sometime, but has now been off of it for a year and a half. While he was in the hospital and on the vent he contracted the MRSA Infection and has battled it ever since. I\'m assuming because his immune system is so compromised now or possibly because the MRSA has compromised his immune system...I\'m really not sure. He cannot even get the slightest urinary tract infection or it turns into MRSA. This is so frustrating and so difficult for him to constantly fight because he is frail since his accident. Needless to say, he usually comes through it eventually.
Now, I\'m concerned it will be different. He had rods placed in his neck when he initially broke it and they eventually wore a hole in his head after one of the screws \"backed out\" of his head and put pressure on his scalp causing a sore. When I found the sore, I contacted his Neurosurgeon who told us the rods were now contaminated and would have to be removed. They cultured the wound when they removed the rods during surgery a few days ago and found that he indeed had the MRSA in his neck and head. How serious is this? Should I be concerned that this could be fatal for him? Could someone please advise me on what I should do or be prepared for? He is currently on Vanco as he has been so many times before...should I be concerned that it will no longer work for him?
If you have any answers please do not hesitate to pass them along...I\'m desperate!
Thank you,
Tammye

Today is my 25th birthday, to my somewhat lack of surprise I can see already no one really seems to care. I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
First of all thanks so much for sharing your story.
1) The culture from the rods/lesion which grew MRSA will be sent for sensitivites so they can see if it is still sensitive to vanco..and most are...
2) Your neurosurgeon should consult the infectious disease team to address the ? of chronic suppression after his 4-6 week course of Vanco AND whether a 2nd agent should be added here to the VANCO (to exert synergistic effect...rifampin or levaquin are often used for this)
3) He should be able to clear this...and you guys both sound like fighters...what an amazing story please pass along our good wishes and keep us posted
