O.K. Here's my situation. Last Friday when I got home I had a voicemail from the principal stating there was a child in the school that had gone to the Dr. and was diagnosed w/ MRSA, but she was assuring all parents that they were going to take the proper steps over the wk-end and clean, clean, clean. Well, I called the school Monday and asked if this child was attending school, I was told yes, the principal wanted him to stay home for a few days but the parents started in about federal laws/rights blah, blah, blah. Then I was told that this child was not around other students, and a bunch more hogwash. (My stepfather died from this) I tell them to have my son come to the office he's getting picked up. O.K. then I found out 2 more children in elementary school had this and the principal told the parents/guardians to keep them home until the uproar from the parents calm down. (our elementary and middle school adjoin) So, then I called the health dept. to see how many cases had been reported and only one had been, the nurse said she was going to have to get onto the Dr.s b/c this was suppose to be reported. Then the superintendent called everyone (concerned parents) and told them to go to our school web-site and learn more about MRSA. I want the school to be honest about how many kids do have it and quit covering this crap up. Maybe I was wrong for taking my child out, they said he would be counted unexcused and wouldn't be allowd to make up his work, I told her, we would see about that.
I mean if I don't protect and look after my kids and whats in their best interest, nobody else is, the county next to us has closed their school down due to MRSA.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I understand your concern as a mom. I am a mom and am living with my 5th outbreak of MRSA. The concern for my child is huge. Is she at risk yes. The fact though and I have done tons of research trust me, is that 30% of the population is walking around with positive MRSA. It colonizes in our nostrils and it lives on surfaces for 30 days. So while the schools are trying to calm parents by cleaning, unless this becomes a daily rountine and children avoid touching each other, I think it is most likely a waste of time.
The best thing to do is to educate your child. They need to wash, wash wash their hands with soap and water frequently. Avoid putting hands near face, on open cuts, etc. When your child gets a cut, or open sore, clean it, put antibacterial cream or spray and cover it up with bandaid. We are not going to get rid of this MRSA, education is the key to controlling it.
You yourself may test positive for it. I have no idea where I got mine, I just am being deligent now about cleaning around my home, towels, etc and being sure to educate my daughter on proper handwashing and injury care.
Best wishes. By the way, I doubt the schools are trying to cover it up, but the doctors are even at a loss for what to do, trust me I know.
Qbased Healthcare has been in the news and have been helping local schools disinfect the schools floors, walls, bathrooms and providing them with skin hand sanitizera for the bathrooms and teachers desks.
The school gave me the information so I was able to contact them direct. This is their website. www.qbased.com and the puracleenrx division website is www.puracleenrx.com/staph
I am no way involved with this company, but I can tell you their products work. Many parents from the school are using these products.
Why do you think a person with MRSA is quarantined at the hospital and has limited contact with all around them as well as friends and family. I lost my leg to MRSA and the pictures can be found in my profile, it is not a pretty thing and must be taken seriously for the sake of our loved ones and friends. I personally would pull my children from school if they are going to let those infected continue to intermingle until the infection has been eradicated from those infected and this could take weeks to do.
Take this seriously, it is not something to be dealt with in a casual way, your children could die or lose a limb!

If the MRSA infection is active and raging then you must for the sake of others segregate as much as possible in order not to put others at risk, at least until it is brought under control. MRSA is avoidable in many cases and you must take precautions to ensure that breakouts will be minimal.
I appreciate your response, but what I said was not stupid nor insulting. Understanding this type of infection and learning how to deal with it in a proper way are of the utmost importance and you must not be led by hysteria, but by facts. MRSA is preventable when you use the right products and use proper hygiene. There are cures out there when it comes to the bacteria resting upon the skins surface. Proper decontamination is essential and proper patient management is also a must. I have not had a MRSA infection since I started using a line of products I created in February of 07'. These work on the surface of the skin and can be a very effective therapy for this condition. I lost my leg to MRSA and this is why one must understand how dangerous it can be and, yes, it can lead to death in at least 19,000 cases per year!
First of all I never said that people didn't die of MRSA but in fact the ones that do die are the immune suppressed, the elderly..People with healthy immune system and antibiotics can colonize the bacteria. Education is the key here. Teaching people how to stop the spread infection..through proper precautions. Teaching how to protect yourself from contacting it in the first place through proper precautions. There are so many people here trying to sell product to people saying that they can cure MRSA. When the FDA says there is a cure then I will listen. But there isn't a cure at this time. Yes it can be romoved off the skin as well as with any other bacteria through a proper handwashing warm water, and friction. Followed by a simple alchohol sanitizer. Cost cents for each wash. Used in every hospital and medical facility in the country. However there is NO cure for it once in the system.Education on the spread and precaution to take to avoid getting it is what need to be done. Research on new antibiotics to find a cure for the horrible infection.
The thing with quarantine of kids with active infections - yes, yes, ohhh hell yes! You do not know or have any way of predicting which children in the school are immune compromised. Nor do their parents or physicians yet, in many cases. There are a lot of forms of immune compromise which are subtle or asymptomatic in children and which could take years yet to diagnose. Others, we can see but don't know how to fix yet - such as the autistic kids being mainstreamed now, who have all kinds of immune issues. What you DO know is which kids to isolate while they represent a higher risk to others.
A mere wish to be calm and reasonable in attitude (or to avoid a lawsuit) does not trump other people's wish for some safety and wellbeing in these publicly-funded and mandated institutions. Better to calmly and reasonably take better precautions. Otherwise, we might just as well send all the other sick kids to school as well, since everyone's panic over it is the only real problem - after all, they all gets colds and flu, and only a few of them die from it!
Gosh I see that there is a lot that people don't know about staph and believe me, I don't want to come off as knowing it all. But folks, MRSA is contagious and MRSA is everywhere.
Awareness is the first thing that can help with this horrible infection. Cleaning the schools is a good thing, but if the parents don't follow the same practices at home, then its all for nothing.
Our school local school sent home flyers that local healthcare companies put together to make parents aware of what they can do AT HOME to help prevent staph. The buses are now cleaned daily, the kids are shown to wash their hads at home and school more often and the schools and parents are more active in disinfecting door knobs, cabinets, etc.
It begins with awareness.
Staph in schools is not a good thing and that is why Q-Based Healthcare took an active role in our school. Their puracleenrx disinfectants and skin disinfectants are specially formulated for staph. I've also noticed a considerable difference in my childrens skin. (They have dermatitis). The Body Wash is keeping the MRSA off the skin or atleast reducing the bacteria and my childrens skin is back to normal soft skin.
I was told the school is also holding some kind of fund raiser with the disinfectants. I don't know the details, but I would be willing to share if the school indeeds follows through. Just post here or email me.
I am a mom of three school-aged children and have found the Sports Antimicrobial System of products to be effective in the fight against odor and bacterial contamination - especially with sports clothing and equipment - sweat stench no longer exisits at my house - unbelievable - I know. But thats why Im writing. One of their products, FabricAide, you just add to your laundry wash and it fights odor for up to 30 washes - my sheets smell fresh, my dish towels no longer have that musty smell, my kids gym bags, shin guards, socks, etc no longer have nasty odors. . .
SportsAide is for all non-textiles - I spray it on my counter tops, doorknobs, steering wheel of my car and other places - one spray leaves the area protected from bacteria for a month. . . I have heard that some schools are using this on desks and tables in the classroom.
Their products use an EPA approved, safe, environmentally friendly technology that has been used in hospitals for over 30 years. . the Aegis Microbe Shield.
Here is their website if you want more info. www.csgsportscoatings.com
Apparently they also offer a fundraising program for schools, too - I am going to look into this for my son's hockey team after the holidays.
Good Luck!
