I am a teacher, and had parent-teacher conferences today, and met with one family whose child has many many serious issues, and who needs some professional counseling. The child is full of rage and sadness, and her parents (who I do realize love her and are doing the best they know how) are in complete denial and are looking for a scapegoat. I'm usually very professional and composed, and I did keep my cool, but I found myself thinking, "How can you take this child for granted and waste the chance to help her have a beautiful life?" It hurts so much to see unwanted and uncared-for children when so many of us welcome them as the most precious gift imaginable.
