Menopause Support Group
Menopause is the physiological cessation of menstrual cycles associated with advancing age. It normally occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, when the body begins to slow and stop the production of eggs, estrogen and progesterone production decreases, and menstruation diminishes, eventually stopping altogether.

I know I'm at least pre-menopausal. But how do you know when its menopause?
I started having hot flashes November before last, 2005 for about two months off and on. Then they went away. I missed one or two months menses and then everything went back to normal and hot flashes stopped.
Now about two months or so ago (two years later), they have started again - the hot flashes I mean. And I didn't have a period last month. I don't really have mood swings now, the first time I did but this time, its just the hot flashes. When they come I feel like I'm going to melt. I make sure I wear clothes I can pull off quick.
It affects my sleep. I wake up because i'm sweating and kick off all the covers. then a few minutes later, I'm chilled and pulling them back on. its a viscious cycle but not as bad as the first time around in 2005. During that time, I acutally had to keep a small bowl of ice water on the night table with a wash rag and wet down my chest at night when they came. Before I started doing that, I got a terrible heat rash all over my chest which was itchy and made it worse when the heat flashes started. the icey water was a pain but helped the rash and gave quick relief. I did have mood swings during that period. but after a couple of months, it seemed i was back to normal until now. These hot flashes aren't quite as intense or as long and no heat rashes.
I don't have a Dr. so I don't know if I'm pre menopausal or IN menopause.
What does this sound like? Last period was about two months ago. I will be 52 Jan. 08.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Menopause is one day. It is on the one year anniversary of your last period. You are in perimenopause until it has been a full year since your last period. After the one year anniversary of not having periods you are then post menopausal whether you still have hot flashes or not. Some women have them for the rest of their lives.
Oh no no no! Say it ain't so! I couldnt stand this the rest of my life. My face actually turns colors I get so hot. What is the percentage of those that have them the rest of their lives? I hope it is a small percentage! Thanks for clearing the rest up for me. now I know I am perimenopausal (and how to spell it. :) I always say Pre-menopause.)
