Lyme Disease Support Group
Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. It is now one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the U.S. Lyme disease is caused by infection with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, and is primarily transmitted to humans as well as dogs, horses and other domesticated animals by the bite of infected ticks.

to any rhode islanders or people from other states where lyme is actually covered by insurance...
i am in nj and i understand that the doctors are protected and able to treat patients long term for lyme and also that in rhode island insurance companies are required to pay for lyme treatment.
to me, that sounds unreal because it is almost impossible to even get treated here in NJ and we have ticks galore!
in nj, unless you have an EM rash or a obsiously positive elisa, then treatment is almost impossible to get. even if you do qualify in the above terms, the best you will probably do is 28-30 days of treatment no matter what your symptoms are.
i know my insurance company will not pay for treatment beyond 28 days. they already will not pay for the needed specialized tests or the needed specialized out of network doctor(since no one in network can or will treat me...). now they are going to not pay for my treatment even with a diagnosis after all of these years!
i have been told that each IV med can be 1-3k/month and some antibiotics are up to $500/pill when insurance does not pick up the tab. what are they being paid for anyway?!?!
so, basically, i am already looking at craigslist listings of apartments in rhode island, because if that is what is going to be more affordable in the long run, then i shall have no choice.
those of you in rhode island, please let me know if the doctors are truly protected and also if the insurance companies truly do cover the treatments, etc.
i thought docs were protected in NY, but they still take cash only, no insurance if they are going to actually be able to treat you(or none so that i have found anyway and i have been looking!).
i hope that the rule in RI protects me, even though i am not a resident and i hope that my insuarnce has no choice but to pay up once and for all!
thanks and any advice is appreciated!

I am sorry I am just getting into this nightmare of insurance companies and trying to get treatment. Chelsea has had lyme disease for 8 years but has been off and on oral antibiotics a month at a time .. We have paid out of our pockets for doctors that our not in our insurance network. Thousand of dollars. I know some people that are paying $22,000 a year for IV's just to stay well. I pray for you and want you to know I am thinking of you.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
