I am under the impression that a herx is either flu-like symptoms, or a worsening of lyme-related symptoms. In my case these can be very different things. Is this an accurate definition? On day 5 of treatment, the weakness in my legs is not as pronounced, as it was 24 hours after I began the drugs. However, I have had slowly worsening pain over one kidney. I went to my pcp today, he doesn't think the pain is coming from my kidney. I tend to have a lot of muscle/nerve pain throughout my abdomen, sides, unfortunately it is always in the vicinity of some vital organ, and never really resembles muscle pain, thus all of the medical testing and scans I have had to have over the years. Urine was clear, no pain when he tapped on my kidneys, however, I swear the pain coming from that area is going to kill me! I have had fleeting intermittent pain in this area before, over the years of weird lyme symptoms, nothing like this though. Herx? Bacteria being fought off? Bacteria fighting back? New lyme symptom? Drug related? Unrelated? I don't know what to make of it, and I'm obsessing over it. I think I'm going to have to take a hefty dose of xanax, as I am starting to panic, and the advil hasn't helped. Is something like this common when starting treatment? What are others doing to relieve horrible pain? Fear?
