Lupus Support Group
Lupus is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system cannot distinguish between threats (like viruses and bacteria), and healthy cells and tissue. As a result, the body produces antibodies that inflict cell damage, most commonly targeting joints, skin, kidneys and the nervous system. Join the group and find support for coping with lupus.

My thyroid level is at 4.98. My dr only sent me a letter that everything is acceptable. I started reading about thyroid levels. The OLD ways were .4 - 5.0, and anything within that is "acceptable". For several years now the "NEW" levels are .5 - 3.0. It said right in this article that only SOME doctors are embracing the new levels. My levels WOULD be alarming if judged by the new levels and the dr's would be looking further to help me. Does anyone else know about this and can you help educate me in this area? thanks!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Also doctors are very hard to accept change most ewspecially when "it's worked"for decades.
To get a more complete picture of what is going on with you thyroid you need to have a T3 and T4 done with the TSH. If you TSH is high and the T3&4 are both low then you MAY have an underactive thyroid. If only one is out of range but not by much then this may be "normal" for you. You should have the test repeated a couple times and if it stays the same chances are you just run a bit differant from the genreal population.
Normal ranges are what is the aveage for most people but they do not cover everyone, ther are people who fall outside the norm either high or low but are healthy.
I have a friend that has a very low white count it only comes up into the "normal" range when he is ill. The doctors are not worried BECAUSE it does respond to illness.
However if you are still worried you can ask to have it repeated at a differant lab. There is the off chance that the result is wrong. A second opinion will not hurt and could make you feel better.
Hope this helps..........Deb
