Lupus Support Group
Lupus is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system cannot distinguish between threats (like viruses and bacteria), and healthy cells and tissue. As a result, the body produces antibodies that inflict cell damage, most commonly targeting joints, skin, kidneys and the nervous system. Join the group and find support for coping with lupus.

Hi, I have been recently diagnosed with lupus, and have made some changes in my diet hoping it will reduce some of my symtoms. After researching online, I found out that dairy must be eliminated. Some sites also said that soy must be eliminated. Please tell me if soy is okay? Also, if I can't take either dairy or soy, what is a good substitute?

Today is my 25th birthday, to my somewhat lack of surprise I can see already no one really seems to care. I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
So yea, potassium can be dangerous to some people with lupus.
I really don't have anything to do with dairy anymore. I have tried to drink 4 oz of milk (the amount allowed in my diet) but i couldn't stand the taste. I had gotten so used to not having it my taste buds were like "Eww!!"
Dairy is mostly a no-no because, after all it is a hormone from an animal. we still consume some but try to make sure it's all organic.
there's a lot of controversy on soy and the different forms and which is good and which is bad. when I hear this variation in opinion, I just rotate it in my diet. some soy milk, some organic cow milk, some nut milk and so on.
that's just my own consensus and I hope it helps you.
my acupuncturist used to say soy is OK unless I begin to feel "cold" and I've noticed that a too much soy tends to make me feel less "hot."
it's all a balance I guess.
Based on the different comments, I think the use of dairy/soy is based on each individual's situation and how the lupus is affecting them.
If you feel uncomfortable about using dairy/soy, try almond milk. It's high in protein and has the consistency of milk.
Laloo's makes a great goat milk ice cream and I find it at Whole Foods Market, along with the Meyenburg goats milk and butter.
Hope it helps!
