I am 19 starting school soon college student i have been fighting lupus now for almost two years for the past 8 months ive been having CHRONIC insomnia, ive been past the cognitive therapy down to acupucnture,herbs, now i am about to give up and go on damn sleeping pills i dont know any other options anyone going through the same??? maybe there is a link or the medications ive been taking? i would like to know thnx

I am 21 and have been fighting lupus for the past couple of years as well. I was completely opposed to sleeping pills before trying them. Honestly, sometimes you just need to be able to break the cycle of not being able to sleep. I went on the sleeping pills myself for 3 months and then was able to come off of them. Maybe you will only need them for a month or two!! I hope you feel better.
I have insomnia too- it can be a side effect of the lupus and the prednisone (for me, it seems to be the prednisone). I'm taking Ambien and it helps, but I have a whole routine now, including mellow music, stretching, relaxing mentally, hot herbal tea, relaxing scents etc before I go to bed. I've taken melatonin (which helps) but don't want to take it on a regular basis. I also tried bedtime tea 1 hour before going to bed (trader joes) and it also works.
I also read about taking a certain type of magnesium supplement with your calcium will help you sleep like a baby..but i still yet have to get the book.
Please be careful with prescription sleeping pills. While they work wonders for most and serve a much needed purpose, they can also be tricky...When you take them PLEASE make sure you immediately go to bed. While on Ambien I, and many friends, have experienced blackouts...basically you've taken your pill, but you are awake and don't know you are. People have been known to eat without remembering and wonder why the heck they are gaining weight, or have a friend talk to you the next day about the lengthy 3 am conversation you had with her and you don't remember it. In more extreme cases, people have gone out of the house and driven places.
Just be careful and I hope you get back to a normal sleep routine...I'm still trying. :(
