Lupus Support Group
Lupus is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system cannot distinguish between threats (like viruses and bacteria), and healthy cells and tissue. As a result, the body produces antibodies that inflict cell damage, most commonly targeting joints, skin, kidneys and the nervous system. Join the group and find support for coping with lupus.
Depending on the work load of the pathologist at the lab where your test is done the results can take a few days. Several slides are made with the marrow, some are stained with the same stuff we use for blood slides and some are stained with special stuff just for bone marrow. That one takes awhile, like hours to do right and it HAS TO BE RIGHT.After the slides are stained then they go to the pathologist who will look at them under a special scope. This can take hours to as the doc lookes at each slide and they look at the entire slide not just parts of it.They look VERY hard for anything that is abnormal. They also look at everyslide not just one. I have made 3-10 slides on a patient and the doc looked at each one. This is for your benifit.Sometime it will take a day or two to look at all of them but be patient please because the pathologist is doing thier best to make sure that nothing is missed.
Most samples are taken from the hip area but sometimes they go into the breatbone. They like the hip more because it has more marrow in it.
Try to relax and not worry to much.....I hope all you slides come back normal. Deb
I would ask for Xanex, it is an anti-anxiety drug that does not seem to have a bunch of side effects and you would only be taking it the morning of your procedure. One small dose should do the trick. It may put you to sleep if your not used to drugs.
I know it is scary but the MD has done a lot of these and you should not feel any pain. Try to get a good night sleep and try to think of good things. I won't say relax cause that would be a bit hard to do but do try not to let this prey on your mind. My mother used to say that the fear is generally worse than the fact. She was a RN and I hate to say it but she was usually right. Good Luck.Deb
