Kidney Stones are solid crystals of dissolved minerals in urine found inside the kidneys or ureters. They vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. Kidney stones typically leave the body in the urine stream; if they grow relatively large before passing, obstruction of a ureter and distention with urine can cause severe pain most commonly...
Non contrast CT scan is the imaging of choice for kidney stones because it is the modality able to pick up ALL kinds of stones
Not all stones are visible on xray and your urologist should know that...here is the info:
1) Kidney Stones are classified into five categories based on their composition: calcium oxalate (70 percent), calcium phosphate (5 to 10 percent), uric acid (10 percent), struvite (15 to 20 percent) and cystine (1 percent).
2) Kidney stones can be classified more broadly into calcareous (calcium-containing) stones and noncalcareous stones.
3) Calcium containing stones usually are visible on xray WHEREAS Noncalcareous stones (uric acid, cystine, and struvite stones) often are radiolucent or POORLY VISUALIZED on XRAY.
