Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Support Group
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disorder that is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping, and constipation. Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.
I think that you are on the right track. I heard that you should not eat a big meal just before bedtime. I like to eat an early meal but I can't help all my noshing on sweets, etc., after dinner.
Digestion works best when you're vertical, so get up for a walk or something after dinner. It's a healthy habit and will help you digest your food properly. If you lie down on your left hand side, your stomach won't fully empty into your small intestine. This is because the lower sphincter valve of the stomach is on the right hand side. The sphincter valves at the top and bottom of your stomach are controlled by the amount of acid in your stomach contents. More acid closes the valves. This is important for gerd and IBS-D when you dump the contents into the small intestine before it's ready for it. The amount of water you drink with your meal may dilute the stomach acid and cause this dumping problem.
