Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Support Group
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disorder that is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping, and constipation. Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.

Its been several years for me since I was diagnosed so my memory may be a little off but I think IBS is diagnosed when other, more serious conditions are ruled out; ie chrohns and colitis.

cookies is right the only way to be diagnosed with IBS is to rule everything else out. It's called an exclusionary diagnosis.

Depending on your age and symptoms the grastroenterologist may want to do blood tests, a stool test, an upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy - not fun, but will "see" what is there. May also do a ct scan and or an ultrasound... OR he/she may just poke and prod and say 'hmmm' a lot (always my favorite, lol)...hugs jilly

I was just diagnosed with IBS on 12/6/07. For me I saw the doctor on tuesday where I told him all of my symptoms and then on thursday he did an endoscopy and colonoscopy. It wasn't to bad. They knocked me down with versed (hypnotic and sedative) and demerol which is a strong pain medication. the endoscopy was done last and I dont even remember that but they the colonoscopy hurt badly. The nurse said they started before the meds had kicked in and it normally doesn't hurt at all. If you have any questions feel free to message me. I'll help you out if possible. GOOD LUCK!!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
