Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Support Group
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disorder that is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping, and constipation. Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.

During my senior year of high school I began to get really bad heart burn and cramping almost all the time. My doctor did not seem to concerned and contributed it to the stress. Then, near the end of senior year I began having a problem with loose bowels. I did not think much of this at first, and just thought that it was due to stress as well. As the summer continued the loose bowels became worse and more often, by the end of the summer they were almost every other day. I was moving cross-country for school and figured my stress level had gotten even higher. Once I got to school, instead of going away, the bloating, cramping, stomach pains, and loose bowels increased to almost every day. At points I could not make across the SMALL campus of my school without having to sit down due to feeling like I was going to have a loose bowel. At first I contributed this the stress (yet again) and then to the change of food. Two and half months in to school it had not gotten better and I couldn't remember the last time I had a semi-solid bowel movement and no pain in my stomach. I tried avoiding certain foods, no change. I went to see the school physician and he diagnosed me with IBS after talking to me for less than five minuted. I was put on librax (spelling?) and sent back to class. A month later the "IBS" has gotten to the point where sometimes I don't feel l can go to class. Last Thursday, I was unable to take an exam because I was having uncontrollable loose bowels every 6-8 minutes. I did go to the health center, and the Rn (who is there when the Dr. is not) asked if I had ever been scoped. I said that I had just been "diagnosed" with IBS recently and had not. She responded by saying that I needed to be when I went home. (I have an appointment with the GI when I go home over Thanksgiving to discuss things.) When I told my boyfriend (who is an MA) about what happened, and what the Rn said, he said I was quite young to be scoped (I turned 19 in September). Do you think I should just contribute this to ongoing stress and IBS or do you think I should push the GI doctor to scope me to make sure nothing else is wrong?? If the GI was to scope me do you think it should just be the colon or go for an endoscopy as well becasue of the stomach pains every time I eat???
