Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Support Group
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disorder that is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping, and constipation. Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.

I've had IBS for 20yrs and it wasn't until the past year that I found some relief. Aaaaah.
First I did research on www.helpforibs.com where I've learned to change my diet and found helpful supplements.
First I started with a bland diet, then I started introducing different foods back into it. If I had a reaction then I'd cut them out.
I've had to cut out red meat, salads unless I eat them last or not at all. No more broccoli which is a bummer its about the only veggie I love. And the BIGGEST one CAFFEINE!!! It's tough at first but once you realize that you are feeling better you won't miss it.
I also use the soluble Acacia fiber which has helped with the constipation. Then there's the fennel tea that has been a miracle for me when I do have a reaction. I found it to calm my "stomach" and helps with the cramps. It's almost instant relief for me.
The pepperment/ginger helps with the gas and diarrhea.
Don't want to sound like a salesperson here just want to help provide some hope and help to others who are out there suffering from this deblitation condition.
If nothing else check out the trigger list and start with bland and re-introduce foods back until you have a list of what doesn't work for you. This is a tricky condition so you may not have the same trigger foods I do.
All the best to you on your road to wellness and let me know if any of this information has helped you.

Great advice. You've got the diet part down perfect. My additional suggestions are to cut out any drugs your currently taking (if possible), and to consult a herbal doctor to diagnose your problem and speed the cure. For me the combination gives 95% relief from IBS-D. I'm still looking for the last 5%.

What does IBS-D and IBS-C mean? I have discovered that changing the diet can help immensely, and that drugs (all of them) are generally no good. Diet can be different for everyone. Check for allergies. Unfortunately, I have had to change my tune temporarily. I'm taking steroids to reduce the inflammation in my ileum. Everybody; make sure your doctor has ruled out all other possibilities before they pass you off as having IBS. It could be parasites, bacteria, female stuff, gall bladder, IBD, etc. I'm telling you this because I've had extreme symptoms for over 18 years; and I've just been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. Which can be very serious; especially if you don't know that you're dealing with it.

I drank pop all my life and I also started feeling better after I stopped cafiene. For me it's too much sugar and the cafiene that does it to me since I also over did it on the sweets. I started to feel even better after I stopped the sweets. The cafiene is even worse for me, but now i stay away from both.

hey thanks for the post. I also found helpforibs very insightful. I liked their lists of soluble vs insoluble fiber, trigger foods etc. they really helped me to establish a base of core foods that I can and cannot eat. Especially in the begining of ibs diagnosis when you dont know what your triggers are. glad you found relief from the website!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
