Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Support Group
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disorder that is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping, and constipation. Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.
New with IBS and feel helpless

Hi,
I'm new with IBS and am feeling totally helpless.
I started having cramps about a month ago after my appendisectomy and a few weeks later they got really bad during a very stressful week.
My doctor gave me Lanzoprazole anti-acid medicine, which hasn't done anything for me. A few days later I was given Colofac (mebeverine Hydrochloride) and at the hospital some fiber and laxative products. So that's what I'm taking at the moment for the 3rd week with no help. First i thought it was helping a little, but then i ran out of medicines and thought I'd be fine. 3 days later my stomach started getting much worse again. I cut out all coffee and dairy products and my stomach only got worse.
Now my stomach swells almost twice the size that it normally is and I'm totally down because of it. I have constant cramps and cannot even sleep. I went to see my doctor again as i was scared i could have an ulcer as I also feel dizzy and nauseus, but he just prescribed the same medicine.
I'm going to go to a hospital tomorrow. There must be something i or someone else can do.
If anyone has any advice, I'd be extremely happy about it.
Thank you.

I have been here before, a long long time ago and now I am back.Forgive me for not just saying what I want to say, even under a triple dose of antidepressants it is still raw and seeping and I am hesitant at revealing it as at least under the bandages around my heart I don,t have to look at how raw and wounded. My child was cleaved from my heart by his own actions. my child of ten, turning eleven...

theatre and I are there already. I'm having a very berry tea with crackers, cheese and cherry tomatoes and she's having a joint with some beer and we're both on really comfy recliners on thick pile carpet. we need some help with the decor if anyone is around??
I would add that your doc has prescribed an anti-acid drug that would be absorbed in your intestines, but stops excess stomach acid being produced. You also describe the symptoms as being in your stomach.
If this is a 'bowel/IBS' issue, you may need to tell the doc that it's not your stomach. A lot of people wrongly tell their docs that they have stomach cramps and pains when they mean their bowels, therefore the doc prescribes something for the stomach wrongly.
I'm not saying you told him wrongly, but maybe make sure he is clear that if it's an issue in the bowel area that he doesn't give you 'stomach' drugs.
If the doc still seems not to be helping, make sure you get a second opinion as there is no actual test for IBS. They should test for anything else first and then if it's all clear they can diagnose IBS.
I have the 'D' version of IBS, but speaking to close friends who have 'C' they tell me that it's best to stay away from any codeine based pain killers as they make it much worse.

One of the doctors I saw said that the antidepressants I stopped two months ago were probably helping my IBS and when i stopped taking them, my body did not like it at all. I'd taken them almost two years so I think that's enough of them.
I've been having some probiotic drinks recently and am still on Lansoprazole (and a lot of fibre and a very little colofac and lactulose). Something is helping as I'm finally feeling slightly better. Just a tiny bit better every day. And I'm soooo happy about it.
I've just found out that my father has similar problems (IBS) and he has good medicine for it, which helps him. I'm going home in December and will speak to a proper doctor there.
I believe it's the anti-acid medicine that is helping so my IBS could be an ulcer as well. I do get problems with the stomach from time to time after eating. I have cramps in the stomach and in the bowels, but mostly in the bowels. I'm not planning to stop the anti-acid medicine though as it seems to be the only one helping. I even think i might have both IBS and an ulcer, but my doctor said i don't have an ulcer. He decided that without any tests, but then he agreed to send me to tests for helicobacter. I'm now waiting for results.
I don't take any painkillers so i don't need to worry about them.
Thank you all so much for your amazing support!!!
I have not had a colonoscopy. Only a coupld of blood tests, an x-ray and trying my stomach with hands.
I bought some digestive enzymes as i read that some people have results with them. I took them only yesterday and I have to say I'm feeling slightly better. I also drank a bit of fennel tea to get rid of the wind, because my stomach gets to about twice the size as normal because of bloating. Will by more fennel tea as well.
