Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Support Group
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disorder that is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping, and constipation. Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.

I was afraid that I wasn't getting enough fiber, I've been eating very bland food. Well for breakfast I had a glass of benefiber and water and then half a cup of all bran in a cup of soya milk and I opened a capsule of 5 strain acidophullus into it and ate that. Then I drank another glass of soya with a tablespoon of crushed flax seed in it and drank that.
Well, in a few minutes I got really cold and tired and had to get into bed with my sweater, socks and all the covers on. I thought I would go to sleep, then I started to get restless legs (and arms) and started to feel hot and prickly. Then I started to get gas like you wouldn't believe. My bowel was cramping and despite usually having C I spent the next 1 1/2 near the toilet! I'm finally calming down now but I scared myself so much I was panicky and crying. This experimenting to find the right thing is making me worse!
So I know what NOT to eat for breakfast now, the question is, what do I eat for breakfast? Plain white toast? Whole wheat toast? With a bit of benefiber before?

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Fiber should be added slowly to your diet as it's more difficult for your body to digest (thus why it's good for slowing down IBS-D or speeding up a sluggish IBS-C bowel). My daugther (8yrs old) takes Benefiber (1tsp/twice daily) and it's worked very well for her. Me -- I did very well on Citrucel twice a day (morning and night).
Did your doctor suggest the Benefiber? And if so did he recommend a dosage? If so, I'd introduce it as he/she recommended and see what happens. If you dive head-first into changing your entire diet so radically and quickly, you could end up doing more harm than good.
Slow and steady wins the race. Additionally, by doing things slow you'll be able to see what fiberfull foods give you more trouble and what might do the trick to get your sluggish bowel moving without overdoing it.
Good luck!
