Interstitial Cystitis (IC) Support Group
Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a urinary bladder disease of unknown cause characterised by pelvic and intense bladder pain, urinary frequency (as often as every 10 minutes), and pain with urination. It is not unusual for patients to experience nocturia and pain with sexual intercourse. IC is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), particularly outside of the USA.

I have had trouble with my bladder for years, and haven't been able to find any help. My new Family Physician wants me to see a Specialist on Wednesday. He told me that this specialist uses an acid of some sort, inserts it into the bladder, to test for IC. This scares me terribly! Isn't there another way to check someone for IC? My Dr. also said that I may need to have electro shock treatments to strengthen the muscles that support the bladder. That doesn't sound too good to me either. I've never had electo shock treatments to any of my organs, so this scares me.
Doe any of this sound normal to you? (acid inserted into the bladder, and electic shock therapy to strengthen muscles)
Thank you,
Lorie

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

I hope you didn't do the treatment, that is some wacko doc who would do that to a person when the bladder is obviously already inflammed, hey lets make it worse, NOT. The only things going in the bladder should be things that soothe it - GOOD LUCK
I agree with everyone don't do this! it's painful and you don't need anything else to aggravate an already inflammed area..In my opinion it may have been the catherer used for a quick in office cystoscopy that started my whole IC syndrome-which has been going for 16 mos..with constant urgency, frequency, pressure, etc...
I read in Cath Simone's books that she felt a catheter "kicked off" her whole ordeal as well..Also I think the electro shock you are talking about may be something they do in physical therapy to help you relax and retrain tight pelvic muscles (I've had this)..a device put into the vagina is attached to a little machine which register how "tense" your muscles are. You do exericise which are designed to re-train the muscles and the readings on the machine show the therapist what your muscle tension levels are...there is no "shock" or anything scary involved...is this the type of procedure you were talking about?

Do not let them do that to you. There are other ways to find out what you have. My Dr. used Lidocane to find out.
I also have had both of these procedures. The one with the chemicle going into the bladder is not as effective for diagnosis as was the hydro dystention. Ask your doctor to explain each procedure for you.
i also have gone through the pelvic floor procedure. it does not hurt at all. ask your doctor about the success rate for women who have had this. it did not help me. However, I continue to do the exercises I was taught. Good luck. GinnyB
good luck!
