People with insomnia complain of difficulty falling or staying asleep, which results in significant impairment of daytime functioning. Insomnia is categorized as transient (shorter than one week), short-term (one to three weeks) or chronic (longer than three...

Hey guys,
I don't know if this is really insomnia or not, but what generally happens to me
I cannot sleep at night at all anymore. I do get tired during the daytime, but am not able to actually fall asleep, although I have more luck falling asleep during the daytime hours.
Anyway, the problem is, especially when I'm in alot of rectal pain, I cannot relax enough to sleep, so I jsut lay there and lay there, until I just get up out of frustration of trying to relax enough to fall asleep.
This behavior goes on for about 4-5 days straight. I do get brief moments of sleep every now and then during the daytime, but it don't last for more then 5 minutes, and I'm still aware of whats going on around me, so basically what is happening, is I'm going 5 sometimes 6 days straight without REM sleep.
Until eventually, I just "pass out" while watching a movie or something. I'll pass out like that for about 6 hours, and then I'm back up again for another 5-6 day trying to relax enough to sleep thing.
Once in a blue moon, I will sleep a whole night, but that is if I am away from home all day, like if I get up at 4am to go on a trip somewhere, and don't get home til like 9 or 10pm, then yeah I'll sleep like a baby the entire night
but if I'm just at home doing stuff around the house all day is when its the worst. but yet, when I go outside and walk around to get exercise, so I can sleep that night, then I am in so much pain from exercising outside, that the pain keeps me from falling asleep
does this make any sense at all? This has been going on for several years now, but it has been worse since i lost my job in April.
I talked to my family physician about it, and he just says "well you eventually fall asleep, right?" and i say "yeah" and he says "well your fine then" lack of REM sleep for 5 or 6 days is fine, are you SURE doctor?
Tom

I would see another doctor. Losing that much sleep can really affect your quality of life. Have you been able to identify any underlying issues that might be contributing to your inability to sleep at night? For me it is usually alot of stress, or too many worries on my mind late at night.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
