Hi,
I'm new here and just wanted to find out whats available to those who suffer from insomnia--my mind just keeps going and going--it never stops--sometimes it gets better and I get some sleep--but at the most that will last three days--then I can keep a good average of sleeping for roughly the same hours a nite--but other times its sporadic--but lately its been bad--4+ am and I have to be up at 8:30! its funny lately--when i sleep on the couch i sleep through the nite--but when i sleep in my bed i toss and turn--or a mix of couch then bed sometimes work--but even when i sleep on the couch it takes forever to fall asleep--but at least once i am asleep i usually stay alseep--Oh my--well i haven't been to a doc yet becuase i don't want to get hooked on meds and i really haven't had the time to find one and schedule an appointment--so i use benadryl, which for the most part works--but waking up in the morning is difficult and when i was in high school i used nyquil--but that had reverse side effects one nite and i was up until the wee hours of the morning, but it usually works--so thats my story--ne advice?

I would try to sterr clear of over the counter drugz like nyquil and Neo citron because ur body will build up a tollerance. I used to do the same and soon enough i was up to almost a full box just to get some sleep, but totally does the opposite- keeps you up even longer:(

I have to shut off activities at least an hour before my bedtime. I dim the lights. I take about 3mg of melatonin half an hour before I want to fall asleep. When I develop a tolerance I stop for at least a week. I can't use the computer late into the night or it keeps me up longer. I have to drop thoughts about work and money or it will also keep me awake. Reading magazines helps me fall asleep, or laying in bed playing card games on my laptop. I even keep things like flowers, candles, or aromatherapy scents near my bed, anything remotely tranquil. I try to avoid caffeine and sugar in the evenings. Hot baths and sipping wine help too. I sleep with a fan on because the white noise drowns out other outside distractions. Hope any of these ideas might help you.

My story is similar as far as sleeping better on the lounge instead of in bed. Whats the deal with that? I find it easy to fall asleep but my problem is staying asleep.

I think a visit to a pdoc is in order. You could have an underlying problem. I'm bipolar and have alot of sleep issues that are related to my bipolar condition. It is possible that you might also have some type of underlying problem causing it. In any case they can give you something to sleep. Their are meds that are not physically addictive, ask for one of them. Try herbal teas with chamomile, valerian root and lemon balm in them. I like to drink them hot right before bed.

Sleep?? What a foreign word. Although, then again...11 hours...is like a miracle for me...8 hours is actually a miracle. What does that tell you??

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
