My husband and I ttc for 2 years before I went to the doc (in July 07). Everything seemed normal with me so he sent me home with a semen analysis specimen cup for my husband. He did two of those and both were zero sperm counts. We went to urologist. He did a lot of blood work and everything was normal. He checked for retrograde ejaculation where the sperm sometimes goes backwards into the bladder. Negative. He also had an ultrasound. We made an appointment with a specialist in infertility in September. Did more blood work and discussed my husbands varicocele (which we knew he had). He said it was a grade III varicocele (large). So we made an appointment for January for a varicocelectomy and a testicular biopsy. He had the surgery 3 days ago (still very sore). The doc told me after the surgery that he ligated (tied-off) 5 dilated veins. He said most people with varicoceles only have 2 or 3 dilated veins. We are waiting for the bx results now (11 more days) and at 3 and 6 months my husband has to do more semen analyses to see if there is a sperm count. Does anyone know if this might have been our problem. I'm hoping since there were 5 dilated veins that that will greater our chance, but I've also heard 2 docs say that varicoceles cause low sperm count, but shouldn't cause a zero sperm count? Does anyone have any success stories related to this?
