Hi everyone,
here is the skinny on the Google/DS profile thing:
This is lifted word for word from a post by doug addressing this issue in late May:
"hi folks - we've been aware of this issue for some time. here's some thoughts in no particular order:
1) yes, i completely agree with you that privacy is a huge concern on DS. we built this entire site with privacy in mind...it's why we don't ask for real names, and all profile information is optional. privacy is always at the forefront of our concerns when we add new features and maintain the site.
2) I think there are pros and cons on both sides of the Google search argument. YES, we can theoretically block google from finding user profiles...but it also prevents people from finding much of the value that you all are posting to the site. many, many folks come to DS because they do a search for a disease or treatment and then find our wonderful site. on the other hand, i understand that many folks use the same ID for multiple sites, and you want to do anything you can to keep your private thoughts, well, more private than we're currently offering.
thus, i have three "proposals::
1) we are about to launch a new feature that allows you to post journal entries that either a) only you, b) just you and your friends, or c) everyone can view. in this way, you can "lock" your journal entries from google or anyone whom you have not explicitly added as a friend. i think this feature will address many people's concerns.
b) we are looking at restricting google's access to certain areas of dailystrength. i don't have final thoughts on that yet, but please keep in mind that we can't just lock up the entire site, as that would run against the very reason we built it.
c) we'll be glad to change your username to something less identifiable if that's a big issue for you, and you know that you can remove any items of concern (hometown, etc) from your profile by yourself.
i'll be watching this thread from here on out. i look forward to a productive discussion with y'all.

Today is my 25th birthday, to my somewhat lack of surprise I can see already no one really seems to care. I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
I think it is a good thing to have outside people be able to navagate the web site with out being able to visit someones journal. I am all for them being able to read discussions or things like that but journals are a little more personal. I think they should at the very least be a member to access those areas.
Of course if someone googles "miscarriage support" or "depression support" etc. then the daily strength HOME PAGE should appear.
