Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Advanced hypothyroidism may cause severe complications, the most serious one of which is...

I'm going nuts, like the rest of you, trying to undo this awful thyroid puzzle. I was hypo for twenty-some years, and on Syntrhoid. Then this past June for inexplicable reasons, I jumped to the hyper side....about jumped out of my skin for five days....doctor took me off the Synthroid and doubled my beta blocker to reduce the tachycardia. Anyway, he tells me I have subacute thyroiditis that should clear up in 6-8 weeks, then turn hypo again. I'm in my 13th week, and although the hyper signs are less, I still have bad hot surges, heat intolerance, brain checked out, and others....but many hypo symptoms, too. I also have a nasty sore throat, inside and out, and feel "burny" around my neck. I also feel it is getting thicker. Nobody will say if it's subacute or Hashimoto's, and if so, how long it all lasts till I can get back to my good old medication-controlled hypo self. This is nasty stuff for me on top of many other diseases I have. ANy thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I had Hashimoto's and I was never hyper-thyroid. Hashimoto's is where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland and tries to kill it, totally makes it hypothyroid. I am not an expert but I have never heard of it making someone go hyperthyroid.

Hashi's is an autoimmune disease that attacks your thyroid and tries to kill it. You can go from hypo to hyper even on medication because it does sputter back to life.
I am having surgery next week. They are removing the left lobe to see if there is cancer and then I'll see from there. I really wanted it all out so I don't have to do the hyper/hypo dance anymore, but the Dr. is very conservative.
This surgeon also told me to keep taking the levoxyl because my T4 and T3 are fine. I think they are all crazy and we are their ongoing experiment. People who are hyper, they treat to kill off the thyroid and then put them on meds. People with hashi's they treat with meds, but you have the swings. Let's see - do I want a heart attack (extreme hyper) or a coma (extreme hypo)?
Anyway you look at it, you need to watch your meds and get re-evaluated in your blood work. The surgeon told me that Levoxyl and Synthroid tells your system to stop making T4, but I disagree from all that I've read. There is a lot of information out there. You must read and make sure you ask questions and go to reliable sites.
Good luck with your thyroid. Your symptoms will tell you if you are going back hypo. I halfed my meds one month ago at one doctors request and although the heart palpitations are less and the need to constantly move my legs are a little less, the tiredness is creeping back. It's a daily journey. Take care and let me know how you are progressing.
