Hypermobile Syndrome Support Group
Hypermobile syndrome is characterized by the ability to move a joint beyond normal range. People with hypermobility syndrome may develop other conditions caused by their lax connective tissues. These conditions include Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), varicose veins, flat feet, scoliosis, sprains, tendonitis, and bursitis.

I have not officially been diagnosed with anything. I did not even realize there was such a condition. I just knew most of my family is flexible. I started having pain in my flexible joints in my teen years. Knees would slip...woke up one time when my shoulder slipped out...etc.
My kids have similar issues. My older son has trouble holding a pencil because his fingers bend backward 45 degrees at all joints.
My younger son has had his hip slip...and can bend his thumbs backwards....(not down to the underside of his forearm like most of us-but up and to the top of his forearm)
I have had near constant pain in one area or another for years...but it is getting worse and I am to see a physical therapist for the first time tomorrow.
should I make it a point to mention my flexibility to the pt? and what can I do to help my boys?
Does any of this sound familiar?

discuss with your pt, but you may have to try to see a speciallist such as a orthopedist or rhuematologist. my rhuemy diagnosed me years back and we treat the symptoms with meds and splints.

If the joints slip that far out that easily, you should also ask your doc about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. It's a connective tissue disorder that may or may not be a more severe form of HMS.

i also say discuss with your pt. also try your orthoped or rheumatologist. i was diagnosed last yr by my rheumy but i've had this for many years. the best exercise is swimming usually. i think the flexibility you talk about with the boys sounds a lot like ehlers-danlos syndrome. you might want to read up on it.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
