My son was recently diagnosed as HIV +. We want to support him in any way possible - he has met with the doctor already, labs were taken, etc. He has only disclosed his status to us (Mom, Dad, brother, sister) and his favorite Aunt. Doctor says we are not obligated to tell anyone else - and my son doesn't really want to. HOWEVER, I feel like I'm hiding something from others. We have good friends with small children who - if they knew - I feel certain would shun my son out of fear of "catching" HIV. We have worked hard on educating the whole family on modes of transmission and I KNOW it can't be passed by casual contact, but I still feel so guilty for not disclosing. But I also think it would only serve to scare other people (who are generally not educated about HIV) and put my son (who is 21) in an awkward position. Please help! I guess I just need reassurance that he is not going to "accidentally" infect someone thru a cut, etc.
