Hi,
I am new to this board, and new to the whole idea that I have a health problem! I thought I was perfectly healthy!
3 weeks ago, at a routine physical, I mentioned to my doctor that my mother had had a heart attack at 38. He added a Lipoprotein screening to the other blood screenings.
First he called to tell me my Cholesterol was 230, and started me on Crestor.
The next day he called and seemed very concerned that my Lipoprotein (a) level was 225. He said Lipoprotein (a) was an indicator of risk for heart attack or stroke, and the healthy level would be 14 to 20, anything over 25 being an indicator of twice the risk of a coronary episode (or whatever you call them). He started me on Niastat and aspirin.
Now Im scared to death that Im a walking stroke waiting to happen.
Since this discovery, I am eating Smart Start Oatmeal, multigrain bread, 4 to 8 oz. of red wine, 2 grams of Omega3 fish oil, etc. plus the meds to try to reduce all of this.
Does anyone have similar lipoprotein (a) levels, has anyone successfully lowered there levels?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Since you are on Crestor, have you noticed any muscle pains in your legs? Most meds used to control Cholesterol are called Statins, and have a tendancy to cause muscle pains. If you do have this type of pain, please contact your doctor at once.. and stop taking the medication.

I am in the process of finding a medication that works for me. I cannot take the statins at all. I do take Omega3, but it is not helping my cholesterol at this time.
Best of luck to you.. keep in touch and let us know how you are feeling.
