A dermatologist is the right doctor to see for HS. If you don't feel comfortable with the first one you see, then try another one. If your doctor is not compassionate to your condition, look for another one. This condition is much more than skin deep, it can be very depressing and painful. A doctor you feel comfortable with is essential. Also, a doctor that is able to see you quickly when the need arises. If your doctor is compassionate toward your condition then he/she will tell you exactly what you need to say when you call for an urgent appointment. Also, taking antibiotics if there is not an infection present is not a good idea.

I skipped right over the derm and went straight to the surgeon. Wasn't waiting three months for an appt. Surgery for my left underarm was scheduled for 3 weeks later. There has been improvement where he did it, more surgeries to go but he takes me right when I have a flare up which has been weekly lately (also have it under right arm and thighs and groin) does the excision and prescribes me meds that I may need. He has been absolutley wondrful. I personally believe surgery is the way to go. Creams and antibiotics just don't work, especially as the disease progresses. GOOD LUCK

Skip dermatologists, and go directly to surgeon..( you may have to be referred from your general dr..)
My husband Bob suffers with HS...has been suffering for 14yrs..I should say..they finally diagnosed him 14 yrs ago..but was undiagnosed several years prior..

Hi - I suffer from HS also and have for years. Went many years undiagnosed. I agree with the others. Skip the dermo and go right to the surgeon. My family dr finally sent me to the surgeon, and he know exactly what it was. Antibiotics may help in the beginning (didn't for me) Excision of the area has been the only saving grace for the active areas. Unfortunately, if you have read about it yet, nothing is guaranteed. I have had surgery at least 6 times in the past 5 years (one done last month). Although the area he has removed doesn't reoccur, other areas have started. They seem to travel. If I were you I first would find a dermatologist who could take you a bit faster thn 6 months because that ridicolous to make you wait that long. I also would keep that appt just in case you cant find anyone or if tht is the bomb derma also. Two I wouldnt jump to quick into the surgery because like others have said its not promised too it doesnt in my opinion no offense to anyone cause I know it is so debilating you just want relief and true antibotices do not keep it down God if they did the world would peaceful. Anyway I wouldnt get the surgery as quick because if it is going to come back in another place or by the surgical site why keep gettin cut and go thru surgery after surgery thats just me.
