I am new to this site. We just found out my brother has been using heroin for 2 years after supposedly being clean. He was a highly functioning heroin user and we never knew. Recently, he was admitted into the hospital with what we thought was the stomach flu. Days later, he is now going through detox and going into surgery tomorrow to replace the aortic valve in the heart (due to heroin use) and is totally septic (due to an infection in his arms from heroin use). He is about 4 days into detox right now in the highest level ICU and in what could be his last days had a moment of clarity and tried to get someone to bring him heroin. The guy (26 years old) is practically dying from his addiction and still can't walk away from it. He has a catheter, is bed ridden, has a diaper on, will have open heart surgery tomorrow, has stolen over 50,000 dollars from my parents, and is struggling for a breath and STILL is looking for what put him in there in the first place. When do the cravings start to lesson during detox? We are so lost and hopeless right now. Even if he survives this surgery, will he just go back to the heroin. Too early to tell.
