So, I think I am on a real good dose of PTU, finally. I've been feeling better than I have in years. I really am starting to feel kind of normal, and that is such a wonderful feeling. I've forgotten what it's like to wake up and be okay. Of course I have bad days here and there and I get too cocky and take care of myself less and deal with the consequences, but I am just learning this balance so...
Anyway, my question is why do some strongly recommend not being on the meds for too long? I've been on PTU for 2 years. Can I or can I not stay on this forever so long as it works? What are the major cons? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello,I was diagnosed with Graves on July 2016. My lab results became normal after 3 months of taking ATD. I stopped taking ATD on Nov 2016(expecting to be pregnant). Fortunately I got pregnant but my graves came back and I did not take any medications as I know that ATD will affect my baby. My thyroid levels normalized after 12 weeks AOG (except for TSH) without medications and had a normal...

Hello, I am new to all of this. Apparently I was born with this and most of my symptoms over my life now can be explained. In the last few years my health has continuously gone down hill and I've been back and forth to ER's and Dr and specialists. Finally got the diagnosis in February-ish... I have Graves' disease and I needed the RAI-131 treatment. I'm sure you all have been through all of this,...
It's some of the doctors and Endos who don't think patients should remain on ATDs (antithyroid drugs) for a long time. They are simply following what the medical schools have taught.
My Endo has a number of patients on long-termed ATDs therapy, at least 15+ years. I have been on MMI (Methimazole) for 5+ years now.
I am now looking into trying out Block and Replace if my Endo will try this (I don't know if he's into it or not) to give my thyroid more stability and to find the balance.
I would say if your doctor or Endo doesn't agree with with long-termed ATDs, do find another one who will. They are out there.
Take care... :-)
Congratulations on feeling better! I really don't see why you would have to stop treatment with your current medicine if your blood work keeps looking good.
Big hugs!
Heather
Those are the two common adverse reactions I know about though the Leukopenia side effect is rarer.
