Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. It is an intensely painful disease, which in most cases affects only one joint (monoarthritis), most commonly the big toe. The classic picture is of excruciating and sudden pain, swelling, redness, warmness and stiffness in the joint. Low-grade fever may also be present.

I'm on this site to see if I can find any help for my Dad and his gout...My question is, my Dad has hurt his foot a ba-zillion times over his life time, spained it, crushed it, broke it...Could this have an effect on his gout giving him so much trouble now? He has always had flair ups but they would go away with his meds. For some reason now his flair up has stayed for way to long, and because it's the foot that has always been injured I'm just wondering if there might be a connection?

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I was a triple jumper for @ 20 years.
I suffered many sprains, twisted ankles, bruised heels to my right foot before I serverly damaged my right ankle in of all sports a volley ball injury. I spent 13 weeks in hospital and had major reconstructive surgery in it twice.
Fifteen years down the track I get gout in my right foot.
A typical gout attack starts on day minus 2 with pain like scar tissue pain in my injury sight. Day minus 1 feels like my right foot is broken. I cant walk about the place. I think have I broken the Metatarsals, should I go to the Dr and I procrastinate. The next day its clear it is a gout attach as pain is now centralizing in the toes. It now feels like a 5 inch nail is hammered through my toe /s and someone is heating the nail with a blowtorch, so I order cherries and start taking my gout medication. WIthin 12 hours it has subsided to the extent where I can hobble again.
From my surgery experiance I have an ice foot cast which is very helpful for gout. Long sokes in foot baths of Epsom salts also help.

Yes, unfortunately I do agree with the other members. Any kind of stress to the affected area will cause more of a surface for uric acid crystals to be deposited.
Secondly, emotional stress can also cause symptoms... as well as increase the severity of the pain. (Who cannot be stressed when one is in severe pain?)
Also, it is absolutely correct that illness can cause flares. This is especially true in those with compromised immune systems. (Autoimmune Diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and other things...
including medications which suppress the immune system to rid oneself of RA, etc.)
I hope that he can find relief somehow!!
