GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.

Hi all, I am a brand new member. I joined because I need your advice on what I am experiencing and to see if it may be GERD causing my problems.
I am a 26 year old female and have suffered with GERD for about 10 years. About 5 years ago, I finally sought treatment and was put on Protonix but I never really take my medicine as faithfully as I should (and yes, I know all about Barretts, my husband actually had it but cured it with treatment).
Anyway, several months ago we switched to Prilosec because it is much cheaper for us...
Ok, so about 4 months ago I started having really odd symptoms..the symptoms come and go all day long. I will just get a sharp burning pain but I cannot tell if it is in my chest or back, it will linger for a minute, go away and then repeat throughout the day. It sometimes comes with taking a drink of something or coughing and sometimes when I cough, it will burn and itch in that same area. It is on the left side of my chest around and under the breast area. It also seems to get worse with really strenuous physical activity. I have talked to 2 doctors about this, but neither seemed too concerned. I also do have back problems, so I'm not sure if this sounds more associated with GERD, back problems, or even something else but it does scare me.
It does not feel like the typical heartburn pain I normally have but at the same time, I have not been feeling the typical heartburn pain I have always felt. Also, I have GERD so bad I get burning acid up into my throat almost daily with any type of meds.
Has anyone else with GERD had this type of pain? I would love to hear any advice or thoughts. Thanks!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
im not sure what the pain is from but i have had the acid coming up the throat issue but it got better with meds.I dont take my meds reg. either, oops :) but i hope they can find what is wrong.feel better:)
If it scares you, maybe you should ask your doctor to send you for some tests- perhaps blood test etc.
And like you- I don't take my medc as often as I should.. =/
I hope you feel better! :)
