I've had GERD for 4 years. Alot of times, my voice is hoarse. People always ask me if I'm getting a cold.
I went to an ENT specialist to rule out polyps, cysts or spasmodic dysphonia which is a speech disorder that a friend of mine has. Bless her heart, she has to have shots in her laranyx of botox every 8 weeks just so she can speak.
The ENT ruled them all out, but did say that I have signs of Muscle Tension Dysphonia which is a speech disorder that is curable, doesn't need meds or shots, just speech therapy and relaxation.
I'm a chest breathe-er and she taught me that voice is purely air that comes from our diaphram and passes through our vocal folds. My left vocal fold bends a little ....they're supposed to come together.
They also call MTD the "strangled voice" meaning that we talk like we're forcing it from above and let me tell you.......I'm in the music industry and have to yell in loud concerts...that KILLS my vocal chords.
But, for the hoarseness......does anyone have any suggestions on that? I take Prevacid and I don't ever feel the burning or stomach pains. It seems to be doing fine. But, I know that my voice is getting hoarse from something.
Any feedback or products that you've used for hoarseness that works?
THANK YOU!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I had the ph study done again, and yes, he said there was a lot of acid staying in my esophagus. It's surgery again for me.
I have had surgery once, and now I'm going to have to have surgery again.
I have 3 choices just not sure what I'm going to do yet, but, it just keeps getting worse, so I'm going to have to make a decision soon.
You can raise the head of your bed up about 6-8 inches off the floor and that keeps the acid down where it should be.
My ENT told me to take 2 tums at night, and not to use any kind of mouthwash, and stay away from chocolate and peppermint.
I don't know everything but, I have been battling this since '98' so if you need any more info, just send me a message.
I'll help you if I can.

It will change your life!
I never even thought about Claritin. I have sinus drainage alot.
I hear ya on the eating thing. I cut out everything, too, including alcohol and cigarettes, chocolate, sugar, citric acid, tomato......my mom had alot of food allergies. I wonder if it isn't all connected.

Have you asked your Dr. for a prescribed heartburn med?
I'm on prevacid and yeah, it's expensive (they're supposed to have a generic prevacid come out soon), but if you have health insurance that takes care of part of the cost, it's worth it.
I notice on the days that I skip taking prevacid, my stomach bothers me SOOO much. I'm grateful for the med.
There's also other meds that they can prescribe for you.
I've tried the over the ccounter prilosec, zantac....etc. and none really work for me.
Just to find one that's good for you. We don't have to live like that. I know it's hard, we're restricted to foods, but I love what prevacid does for me.
Good luck! ((hug))
