How do you deal with bigotry and prejudice?
What do you say to the people who believe your sexual preference is a choice?
How do you handle snide remarks?
I'm afraid for my son.
If he comes to the determination that he is in fact gay, how can I help him handle the ignorance of the world around him?
He's already had to deal with teasing from his classmates - he takes tap and jazz dancing lessons and loves every minute of it, but his classmates are already making comments...
'Boys aren't supposed to dance'
'If you like to dance, you must be gay'
'Only girls take dance lessons'
So far he's been able to handle these comments...quite well, I must say...but the older he gets, the worse it's going to be, I'm sure.
And if he does realize he's gay, I don't want him to feel he has to hide his true self away, but I also don't want him ridiculed.
Already...because of the dance thing...I sometimes feel like telling him to stop telling his friends he dances because I'm tired of him trying to defend himself against these kids.
But if I tell him that, I might as well be saying he should be ashamed of himself, and I definitely don't want him to feel like that.
Geez...you'd think by now, people in our world would be a little bit smarter, but from reading this board I'm learning that society is still as ignorant and closeminded as ever.

theatre and I are there already. I'm having a very berry tea with crackers, cheese and cherry tomatoes and she's having a joint with some beer and we're both on really comfy recliners on thick pile carpet. we need some help with the decor if anyone is around??

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
The theatrical people are very accpeting.
There is always going to be ignorant people around, and eventually you learn to mute those ugly words.
You learn to be stronger, and sympathetic for those who don't believe in it.
eventually.
when he comes to realize that he is potentially gay, support him like CRAZY! he will need it most then.
now i myself have never been real good at dealing with comments about my sexual orientation, but as long as your son is happy then thats all that matters.
no matter what, coming out isnt easy and at some point he gonna have to deal with negative comment but you need to reassure him that you love him unconditionally.
also, you sound pretty sure that your son's gay, but you say you don't think he realizes it. do you think you might be jumping to conclusions just because he's a boy who likes dance? whether he's gay or not, all you can do is encourage him to be himself regardless of what other people think or say.
He takes dance lessons and was recently accepted into a singing/dance performance group, but he's still very young...10yrs old...so I'm not sure how accepting kids at this age would be.
dragon...
Right now my son is confused about his sexuality. He came to me a few days ago and told me he thinks he might be gay because he and a friend of his played touchy-feely a few years ago.
I told him that was normal childhood curiosity, but I can tell it's weighing heavily on his mind.
And like I said in my initial post...if he's gay, he's gay, if he's straight, he's straight, I really don't care one way or the other, I just want him to be happy with himself and not feel ashamed.
Thanks for your replies.
for me in cali, if is pretty easy to hold a girls hand in public and you can find your own groups in highschool because supposedly 1 in 10 is gay and around ages 13-15 boys and girls start to see that they may not be straight or may be straight..
im just sayin g that maybe later down the road it could possibly become easier for him if he comes out as gay.
I really hope this helps, please message me if you want as i'd love to help.
