Gastritis Support Group

Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Loss of appetite not a symptom of gastritis!

I just spoke with my gastro and he says that loss of appetite is not a typical symptom of gastritis! Now I'm really worried!!

Don't worry . In the very beginning I didn't want to eat either . My appetite definitely picked up but it's taken a while and I still have days where I don't have very much appetite . Your's will pick up . Stressing will just make you feel worse . I know this because I am the Queen of stress !

I was starving...but everything I looked at made me feel sick. I had no appetite when I had my first real bad attack. I felt full but hungry...just didn't want to eat anything. Sounds strange but I think loss of appetite is typical.

I think what makes me worried is the fact that the dr. says that this is the first time he's seen appetite loss in gastritis. I'm starting to think it may be the cause of something else. He's even scheduled me for a CT scan. Everything on the internet says appetite loss can be a sign of cancer. I think I need to stop doing research on the internet. It's making me super stressed!

what are your other symptoms besides the appetite loss?

Looking things up on the Internet is not a good thing to do. I know this because that's the first thing I do when I'm sick ..
Loss of appetite is probably a symptom of a lot of things . If you're very anxious you can lose your appetite too .

Hi running girl Im sure you will get your appetite back. I find it hard to eat as it hurts so much. You proberly will soon find that you have a craving for foods you shouldn't eat for gastritis. Just give it a few weeks and if it doesn't approve you could tell the doctor again. My doctor was saying that my gastro would proberly do some scans on me next. I know the gastro mentioned this but he didn't give me an appointment for it. At least I might get some answers which is what I want, but I don't know what good it would do. I will have to see what he says next time. Its no good thinking the worst until you know it. Its best not to worry.

Thank you everyone for your encouraging comments. Makes me feel a little better. Dagmar68, I also have dizziness at times, usually when I feel like my stomach is upset. My gastro doesn't think dizziness is a symptom of gastritis either. He suggests that maybe i need to see a cardiologist.

I didn't have much appetite at all, especially when I first got gastritis back in July, 2011. But I think much of that was because I was so incredibly sore that I knew I wouldn't even enjoy eating--the pain overruled everything.

I agree that when one is stressed, it's hard to have any appetite. I know for me anyway, if I'm under big stress, my digestion practically shuts down completely.

Try this link. It is not a complete list, but you will see that fullness is actually pretty normal (or lack of appetite). Dizziness is usually due to swelling of the abdomen (realistically, there is only so much room and a lot of nerves packed into one area) or dehydration. Heart palptations, if you have had them or not, is also common due to inflammation.

I say this as someone who suffered with gastritis and also as a heart patient for all of my life. Try not to worry yourself too much and allow yourself a break from whatever it is the doctor has said. If you want to be checked out by a cardiologist, go for it. If not, for now, just try to take a lot of deep breaths, live one day at a time and remember always that there is still little known about this condition. Hang in there and many, many hugs!

Hi there, Running Girl.

Easy does it. I just got a nasty reminder of the loss of appetite with gastritis yesterday and today. Despite trying to be perfect in terms of diet over the holidays, I went of course just a few times and not too much, but it started a nasty flare up again. Lost appetite, and waiting for it to come back. It will, but it sure stinks being like this again!

Once again phooey to doctors and their misinformation. Every one of us have experienced loss of appetite with this illness at some point and for months at a time for many of us. I wish they would join posts like this and see how gastritis impacts on our lives.
My appetite was lousy for many months. I think with any illness that causes pain in the stomach you lose your appetite and then weight.
Enough of my medico ramblings though... your appetite will return. There will always be a list of 'normal' symptoms but I think you'll gain so much from the wonderful people in this group. Please try not to worry as it could add to the pain you already have.
With every flare up you have no matter how improved you are, your appetite will suffer while the pain is there. Just know it will pass and better health will be yours. I'm so far improved from where I was even six months ago.
I managed two four hour road trips over the weekend, 12 months ago I could hardly manage one hour in the car.
Hang in there.

I guess the only difference with me is that I don't have much stomach pain at all. I may have an upset stomach here and there, but my main symptom is loss of appetite. Most of the time I feel fine, well maybe not fine, I feel like I have no energy, but other than that the only symptom I really have is the appetite loss. Many of you have stated that your appetite loss is due to pain, but I don't think that's how it is in my case. That's what worries me.
