Wow, I just realized that I had my surgery 7 years ago. It has been a very bumpy road. (Please anyone new reading this my story is not normal - most people don't have the problems I've had.)
First the good news. The day of surgery I weighed 279 lbs and today I weight 165 lbs. So 7 years out I've kept 114 lbs off. Yes!!!!
I can't believe I made it to 7 years. I've had a lot of complications - mainly twisted bowel problems that was hard to diagnose. I've had 5 surgeries - 2 that weren't necessary because they did not solve the problem. My last surgery was 12/6/2010 and I spend 9 days in the hospital because of a twisted bowel and blocked bowel. I still have an open wound, problems eating and can only work half days. I am getting better each day. So that is a true blessing.
I decided to join this support group because I realized that I need to talk to others who understand what I'm going through. My husband and family are great and have been the best. My church let me so down that I have stopped going and all communications with them.
I want to help others so they don't have to go through what I've gone through. Or if God for bid you are going through what I've gone through you are not alone.
Please feel free to ask me any questions. I will tell you anything you want to know.
Thank you all in advance for your support. May God bless you all.

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

Keep up the good work, and I'd love to hear some "advice" you could share with newbies, and those of us a little further out. I am nearly 2 years post op. I am amazed how well I'm doing, but yet, some times feel it could be a short fall back into some old habits.
Any words of wisdom to share?

Bless you. I am sorry your church let you down. It is sad but that happens often. I pray that churches can get better in being truly supportive of people as they are meant to be.
I am so impressed that you have kept the weight off. I am happy to support you however I can.

I started at 300 and am at 142 now.
I had a recent complications on 12/16/10 and was in the hosptial for an abdominal adhesion (diagnosed and fixed with hours of my symptoms appearing). I know my surgery was the right decision despite this recent hiccup. I am still getting back my energy and trying to eat more to regain some weight I lost during this process.
I too returned to the boards and groups just to re-align my thinking to GPS.
I appreciate the questions from newbies, insight from those going thru the process and advice from long-timers.
Good luck and be well!
Glad to hear you are on the mend!
but hearing Karen's story makes me reflect and be thankful for my own experience.

Congrats to you for the hard work.
Second, you're scaring me with mentioning your complications. Was it all due to the GBS surgery?
My surgery is in a few weeks.
...and "mthankfultoo" will have 10 years!!! Congrats to the both of you.
Karen, thank you for being here for us, I know I am here for you...Joyce
