Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.

O'kay, The surgery we have had (GBS) has re arranged our digestive tract.
Why? Does anyone know?
it is so we mal-absorb as much as possible, so we lose weight faster. If they just wanted to shrink our pouch, they could have done that. But it isn't enough to get the results we need. So they also do the intestinal bypass, to boost our results. .Sugars start absorbing in the mouth so there really isn't a way to mal-absorb them totally, but we can cut down on the time it can be absorbed! This is why we are bypassed.
If we think about our amazing physiology, our bodies have wonderful capacity to overcome all kinds of trauma. This Bypass is one of them.
Your intestines WILL grow back to resume doing their job of digestion. This is called Intestinal Adaptation. Google it, there is A Lot of info out there on it. Much of what you find will be on 'Short Gut Syndrome' and that is good because technically, that is what you now have.
You paid for the mal-absorptive qualities of this surgery, so why aren't you working to keep it?
The best way to keep the mal-absorptive qualities is to feed or supplement to our bodies, in the easiest to digest form, as much of its (our bodies) nutrition as possible. This is why we must now take vitamins and minerals, but also why we should be on protein supplements in liquid form.
Early on your body cannot absorb the protein out of food (including protein bars, they are a waste if you are using them thinking they will supplement protein.). Only the liquid whey protein is broken down enough for your early physiology to digest. This can be in either the drinks or the shakes.
When we hear about all of the weight re gain, this is one of the ways it happens.. You CAN avoid intestinal Adaptation if you continue to supplement.. The Surgeons programs that instruct their patients to NOT supplement protein, or only to supplement it temporarily, are counting on Intestinal Adaptation to take over. Their goal is to get your body back to its normal state as possible! Wouldnt this put us at cross purposes??
I dont know about you, but I happen to know that when my body is in its normal state, it doesnt function properly, and absorbs every calorie within a 5 mile radius! I will be supplementing as much as I can supplement, for as long as possible, but you all do as you choose. I want my surgery to work forever, not just the first year.
Just my thoughts, Let me have it! what do YOU think??
God Bless!

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Thank you for your post. It was very informative. I too want desperately for this to last longer than a year. Thank you for always being so willing to help. You are a very special person.
Take care - Chris
Christine,
If you want to lose and maintain your weight the easiest way, then the protein supplements should be continued indefinitely.. As soon as you stop, you will start into Intestinal Adaptaion. You can stop it by starting them (protein supplements) back up.
If your intestines don't have to adapt to get nutrition, then they won't! Stay on the protein, as well as all your other supplements, this is IMHO the smartest path.
Protein bars are meal replacements. Not supplements. If you never go off the protein supplements then you won't absorb much protein from these, or anything else. They are still food, and your body has to break it down (the same as meat) in order to get any benefit from it. You can eat them, just remember they are 'meal replacement, NOT supplements!'
The plan is NOT to go off food completely.
The plan IS to make digestion and metabolism as easy as possible so The intestines don't have reason to adapt. Eat healthy foods, and you will get some nourishment from it.
If you need extra anything, like calories to maintain weight, drink extra shakes or drinks.Or If you are looking for a snack, turn to your protein supplements. These are a much better usage of calories then sugars and carbs!!
The suggested amount of protein per day can be figured with a formula that Leslie has, or you can ball park it by staying between 60 to 90 grams a day.
I intend to use the protein supplements to get the full 60 to 90 grams a day, and then if I get any from my food then it will be extra!!
I hope this helps!!
God Bless!

Second I just want to clarify that when you are talking about liquid protein you do mean a protein supplement that you can purchase at GNC or other Health Stores?
You must do as you must do. That is fine by me! I don't want ANYONE to do anything they haven't researched and made themselves confidant on.
I am simply stating my opinion. Many others here will be also following their doctors instructions.
I'll bet tho, that I have 10X the experience with knowing how my body is going to react to any course taken. This may sound like an easy assumption, but it isn't. My research into metabolism has been a long journey.
I have as much confidence in my surgeons as surgeons as you do. I just don't believe they have much education on nutrition. The argument then would be that the nutritionist would be the one with the knowledge. 90 % of them are only trained on normal digestion, and metabolism.
We aren't 'Normal' any more..They are taught about the diseases, and ways to cope with them, but they still don't have the experience of those that have lived this lifestyle.
A good website for information from experienced post-ops is:-
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG/
This is not to say that nutritionists don't know anything, They go to school and get a good education, but it is for 'Normies!' They are useful for ground work. get what information you can from them, and then do your own research to see if it really fits.
God Bless!
