LAST MINUTE ADVICE WELCOMED - 5 DAYS UNTIL GBS

Good afternoon everyone!
My GBS is in 5 days and I am very anxious. Can you "vetrans" provide me some advice on the following?:
I. Do you have any helpful tips for before, during, and immediately after surgery?
II. Any input on severity of pain expected for the first few weeks following surgery?
III. My doctor is also planning on implanting a port into my chest for IV's; is this what most of you had, or did you have your IV's in your arms?
IV. My doctor does not believe in using laproscopic surgery for GBS; does the old fashioned method method (5" opening in my chest)cause more pain?

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I wish you the best of luck with your surgery. Mine was 3 weeks ago yesterday. I won't lie, the first couple of days after the open procedure are a little rough. If your Dr. hasn't ordered a binder for you, ask him about it. It has been a life saver for support when getting in and out of bed. They will have you up and walking the same day as surgery,or the next morning. Keep telling yourself you can do this, the more you walk the better you will feel in the long run. I had a pain pump, so I could control how much meds I was getting. I promise you will feel better each day. Keep your determination up, follow the rules your Dr. gives you, and you will do great!
