About 4 days ago my foot just below my big toe started hurting TERRIBLY! I didn't remember injuring it and couldn't understand. It's just gotten worse and worse till now I can't walk on it. I told my mom about it and she said it sounded like gout.
I looked up gout on the net and it said it was caused from too much uric acid, called hyperuricemia. So I looked up hyperuricemia and here's what I found:
Starvation causes the body to metabolize its own (purine-rich) tissues for energy. Thus, like a high purine diet, starvation increases the amount of purine converted to uric acid. A very low calorie diet without carbohydrate can induce extreme hyperuricemia; including some carbohydrate (and reducing the protein) reduces the level of hyperuricemia. Starvation also impairs the ability of the kidney to excrete uric acid, due to competition for transport between uric acid and ketones.
So perhaps it is gout and caused by my new diet?
I'm seeing my surgeon today and an orthopedic doc tomorrow to try and get answers.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I use to drink lots of cranberry juice, and love this tangy juice, but now stick more with the fruits as juice is soooo high in sugar...even if it is "unsweetened".
To keep it away use black cherry juice, if you can tolerte, and celery, is good, black cherry juice is the absolute best though , and they have medication as well but , to maintain keeping the gout away, don't rely on meds.

Coffee actually has something in it which inhibits the accumulation of uremic acid. i know cherries and I think strawberries also help.
Good luck I hope your doc can recommend something i know it can be very painful.
