I had WLS on Feb 1 2006. I had no complications (so I thought) and was loosing weight rapidly. I got that boost of self-esteem and started going out with some old friends to the clubs and such. I was introduced to some new drugs and that was it for me. I was a full-blown drug addict within 2 months. I had experimented with different drugs through out my life and never had a problem stopping. Things were different now. I no longer had food to fall back on. I didn't want to accept the idea that I had been an addict all my life and I just used food to sooth myself and to feed my addict brain. When that was taken away I found something else and unfortunately that was a drug. I am wondering how common this is. When I was in rehab there were 3 other people there who had also had the surgery. What do you think? Do you think there is a relationship between the surgery and addiction?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
The WLS only helps our bodies, not the emotional problems that led some of us down this road to begin with.
The significant weight loss can also trigger past trauma such as sexual abuse - seems that I didn't have a weight problem until just after that event in my life.
I know for me counseling will be VITAL.
Many people have an addiction to food. I myself have recognized that I had/have an addiction to carbohydrates. I have been worried about this subject, because I have heard many stories of people essentially "trading" one addiction for another- and have begun compiling my "Healthy activities or things to become addicted to" list. Also have been compiling a list of goals of things I have always wanted to do, but held myself back because of my fears and my weight.
The bottom line of what I'm trying to say, is 'Yes'. I think it is entirely possible that there is a relationship between WLS patients, and Addiction- although I differentiate between the surgery specifically, and the Surgery patients-
Also, with all of the medical data about how alcohol affects the WLS patients system post-op, I would not be surprised then also if there were other drugs that also affected the body differently than a 'normie' (as much as I can't stand the term!)
Definately an interesting and wonderful question! Thanks for pointing it out!! Am definately interested to hear more viewpoints as well!
