I have a row of hydrangea that grew fast and the bushes are quite full and getting tall. They also look pretty and stay in bloom for a long time. The pines take too long to grow unless you buy them already at a good height.

I'm not sure where you are located, as far a zones are concerned. Rhododendrons are pretty and evergreen. Forsythia grows fast and tall, but is deciduous. Arbor vitae might work, too.

Forgot - tall grasses, like Zebra grass, are pretty and good for privacy.

Escalonia is evergreen shrub with dark green leaves , with a flower all summer in pink, red or white. Escalonia o Brian is yellow/green foliage with pink flowers. It grows fast easy to cut, and is not hard work will grow in most conditions. Privit is also pretty and evergreen , it will flower with small white flowers if you let it , just prune afterflowering. A none invassive bamboo is also a good, but u have to box in the more aggressive types or they take over. In Ireland we also use fushia's as shrubs which can grow to 6ft tall, not sure if it would where u are. An expensive but pretty option in evergreen cameilla's, such pretty rose like blooms in spring.
