Seven years ago, I was really struggling to survive. I had just lost a business I tried to start and was very hopeful at succeeding (an adult foster care home) Since I used to be a nurse, and the training was pretty simple, it actually seemed a step down from the kind of job I had as a nurse in a hospital and nursing homes. However, it didn't take off and I wound up losing all my money. I was so distraught, at the age of 42, I finally tucked my tail between my legs and went back home to mom's. She's my primary abuser, and the only one I had to help me, or it was, live in my car. I had my cats with me, so that was not a very good option. So, I spent a couple of months with her until I no longer could take it. Between then and last year, I tried to recover but slowly declined, and especially when my son died in Sept. of 2005. That tipped me over, and it was no longer a struggle to keep a job, but one to get on SSI. Which proved to be the most difficult thing I ever had to do, including nursing school. In school, I always had a carrot in front of me; the encouragement of passing my classes, and the hope to be able to get through the next ternm, and the next, until I finally graduated. But when I had to apply for SSI, it was a whole 'nother ball game. It was a long and hard battle (3 1/2 years) I had to live in the driveway of a friend's house in my ratty old travel trailer. (but thank God he let me, and I could keep my cats)...otherwise, I would have lost absolutely everything and would have had to go to a shelter and start completely over. Which, looking back, I now see might have been better for me in the long run, but my cats are and were, precious to me. So I am glad to still have my fur babies!!!!
This year I want to regain control over my finances, and continue to help my BF move foreward and get on his own feet. (well, foot, since he's an amputee!!)
