Guys & Gals. I ran one 10K race about a few weeks back. Now, I am doing a 1/2 marathon this coming weekend. I am sponsoring the Leukemia Society and Lumphoma centers of america. It is my first one, and I was doing good training, then got super sick last week. I also went through the final legal aspect of my divorce so I was literally run down. I started training hard again this week and have done good with my running as well as my normal weights, etc. I have not literally ran a straight 13 miles before in my life, and I KNOW 100% I am going to get it done. However, there is always that little bit of head trash taht you need some help. Does anyone have any tricks or words of advice I can use to psyche myself up about this? I am resting Friday & Sat. to be ready for the run. Also, I am not a typical runner. I am 5-10 185lbs and a solid weight, where running had never been my strong suit. I knew for me to be where I am, I had to get serious and this is teh test for me. Depending on how I do, I do want to train for the NYC marathon next November. I'll let you all know about my time on Sunday. Peace!
God bless you all in your activities and goals.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

they can give you some tips on mitivation or getting your zen on when running...good luck!
1- If you are running in a rather large event, the crowd will help carry you through the 13.1 miles. Westchester had a total of 10 people (exaggerating) so most of the run was me against myself.
2- If you have been training do not alter what you are doing before those runs for race day. Your body is used to what you eat and how you sleep so altering that a little may have an affect on your performance.
3- You should be down to only 4-6 miles today and then basically do nothing on Thurs (other than a different type of training) with zilch on Fri/Sat. You could run 1 mile on Sat to get that feeling of running again.
4- Make sure you have good socks and be properly attired. If it is cold the day of the race, bring a long sleeve shirt that you don't ever want and wear it there, then when the race starts take it off and throw it to the side. Your body will feel 20 degrees hotter than the actual temperature. Get your self a Dri-Fit shirt that will help wick away the sweat. Wearing cotton is NOT a good idea as it will get very heavy. There isn't much you can do for a brand new pair of sneakers as you would have wanted to break them in by now with a couple of runs, but I suggest getting running socks. They have more cushion and will help as your feet are pounding the pavement.
5- Get your self 4 or 5 gels. These are loaded with electrolytes that will help you with energy along the run. Take on 15 minutes before your start and then every 45 minutes during the race. You should swallow them with water otherwise they taste pretty nasty.
6- Walk at the water tables. This will not slow your time down at all but it will allow you a quick rest to keep going.
7- Run in increments. I focused on doing 6 2 mile runs. I know that I can do 2 miles easy so that is how I played with my mind. The setup had water every two miles and that made it easier as well.
Message me if you have any other questions. I am going to be running another 1/2 in Philly on the 18th and then probably Miami in January.
I'm in NY so I might just join you for the NYC run, but I don't think I'll ever do a full as that will take about 5 hours and the additional 3 hours of running for the full I could spend getting a massage and a steam.
Good luck and you can do it!
Keep to it. I went training today and did 6 miles at the fastest pace I've ever done.
Keep up with the training and pick out another run so that you have a goal.
So, I did the half marathon actaully in 7 minutes better. I am elated, and so exhausted. But, can't wait to do another. Thanks for encouragement!
I could definitely look into getting the time off from work as well as the finances to cover the trip.
That is a great time for your first 1/2. As I said I did it in 2h18m so if we manage to get to Miami we can easily run together for the race.
For that matter can you explain either?
