Good morning, and welcome to all newcomers! This is our group check-in, so jump in or not as you please:-)
I cannot believe it's already July. I've been so fatigued I feel as if I'm still stuck 3 months ago, or as if it should be October. SOmething time-warp-like. Wow.
Today, in 1917, Aleksander Kerensky solved the "July Unrest" following Russia's February Revolution of 1917 by forming (another) provisional government of Russia. (The question of Ukrainian sovereignty was sticky even then, and on it foundered revolutionary Russia at first.) As things escalated --- this being a revolution, and Russia --- he ended up naming himself supreme commander of th emilitary as well as prime minister of the nation. This didn't endear him to anyone, and in October, the Bolsheviks under Vladimir Lenin overthrew Kerensky and his socialists. Ironically, Kerensky's intent to have "no enemies" among anyone but monarchists gave Lenin the leeway to hold the Glorious October Revolution --- the one the USSR traditionally celebrated as "THE" revolution. Kerensky, btw, died in NYC in 1970, having fled RUssia and lived in exile after October 1917.
In 1987, public testimony began in the "Iran-Contra" hearings, which mostly gave us the punchline, "I have no recollection of that event, Senator". The complicated dance of guns, hostages, and various spooky operations --- to say nothing of money --- led to no one going to jail, because the next POTUS in line (George HW Bush) pardoned everyone before he left office. GHWBush, btw, was VP under POTUS Reagan, and before that was a CIA Director among other things. Yep, he had noooooo connection to anyone or anything involved... ??? Iran-Contra is, btw, considered the first example in the US of "post-truth politics".
What are "post-truth politics"? THey're bullshit. Sorry, but the actual definition is "politics which do not focus on policy or facts, but on emotions". It's a cute term, but it really jsut means "emotional politics". Take it as a given that such a thing has, in the history of the world, ended badly. It usually involves (as it did in Iran-Contra, and in ancient Rome, and in any other situation you can imagine) deception at high levels to protect high-level butts, and a nullification of any consequences by authoirty figures, without regard for fact, law, rule of law, or principles. E.g., Iran-Contra was rendered okay b/c "it freed the hostages". (It also armed Iran, which was under an arms embargo at the time.)
And in 1846, the US annnexed California after a Mexican garrison at Monterey surrendered.
Meanwhile, my "overnight" package arrived after a week. *facepalm* Presumably, they measured "overnight" as it occurs on one of th eouther planets of our solar system...
Weekend be wonderful for all!
