I've had it. Honestly. my Brain gives up by 10 AM. C'mon, brain! Get outta neutral!
The first study linking carbon dioxide to warming was done in the 1930s. the hypothesis was first proposed in 1896.
OK, let's expalin this in high school terms: the carbon cycle. If you overwhelm it, life gets very difficult. Four of the five largest extinctions known to paleontologists are linked to climate shift; only one got tied to an asteroid. (That's the dinosaur-killer, which makes sense, since that general class of animals survived a major extinction at the end of the Triassic period, but dinos really rose big, literally, *after* that end-Triassic event.)
How does carbon tie in? Consider this, in the words of Jon Stewart: Carbon is the slut of the periodic table. it binds with a LOT. So it is readily dissolved in water ----- making it acidic ----- or combined into minerals ----- making anything from clamshells to rocks ------ or absorbed and broken down ----- as in photosynthesis, where the plant/tree uses the carbon and lets the oxygen bits go. Mess up the carbon balance, and too much ends up in the atmosphere and oceans.
Atmospheric CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Simply put, that means if you put a lot of CO2 into an enclosed system (such as our planet, which is a closed system, versus the solar system, in scale), the air stays warmer for longer.
Water, once it gets warm, stays warm for-freaking-ever relative to air.
Warm oceans don't have the same currents as oceans that have warm-and-cold zones.
If the water never gets cold enough to sink, and force up other water, deep-water currents can *stop moving*.
And then the ocean just ists there.
Eventually, as you can see in any shallow pond in high summer, it gets pretty nasty.
And things die.
And.... in the case of earth.... no ocean currents means climate zones change. (See a gardening guide for climate zones, it's a good visual of what I mean.)
TLDR: Earth's thermostat tends ot flip around on its own, and our species thrives best if it's in a very limited range of temps, so let's not end the whole genus Homo, okay? Earth doesn't need us to speed this up. We're lucky as it is. We've had a very long period of time, relatively speaking, in the "sweet spot"!
Too nerdy or "political"?
Then remember this as you hit the weekend unwind (and i pray you all can unwind!)....
"Paste" jewelry, or excellent faux gems made of glass, arose in the 1700s.
A natural star ruby with deep color is more valuable than a diamond.
Rumbling on to the porch chores. UGH. But we'll get the porch fixed, so I guess it's worth it to move the tool and garden cabinets!
HUGS and purrs to all!
Well, in th eUS it is Mothers Day tomorrow/today (Sunday). And here we are. Mothers and not-mothers and maybe-mothes..... but also Kids With Moms. What is YOUR perfect Mother's Day in 2021?
