Good morning! I am up before 9 AM. And... Weirdly... yep, still un-rested. Hmm. Oh well. Guess I'll siesta later?
Interesting fact: The ancient Greeks couldn't grasp the notion of mathematical "zero". Ancient Mayans, yes. In fact, around the same time as ancient civilizations around the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It eventually worked its way to India, or was "re-invented" (hard to know, civilizations fell and rose and fell without leaving much writing sometimes) and from there to China and to Arabia and then to Europe... But the Greeks didn't get it. Mayans, yes. Ancient Iraq-region, yes. The guys who gave us the Olympics, no.
The numeral zero we owe to the Arabic numerals. Weirdly, many don't realize that most of the world use Arabic numerals.
if we used Roman, it'd be year MMXX. Last year, however, would've been MMXIX, and we'd be facing MMXXXIX for 2039. Yeah, kinda prefer the Arabic numerals to Roman letter-numbers;-)
Does it matter? Yes and no. Imagine you need to do your math and there is no zero. how do you write 100 or 2000 or 50? Whole other numbers. A unique symbol for 100. A unique symbol for 2000. A unique symbol for 50. Now try to write 2150. ACK!
The Mayan symbol for zero actually looks like a cross between a footbll and graphic for a loaf of bread. Seriously:
IMagine chiseling that into stone. No thank you!
Happy Bastille Day, France! Today in 1789, men stormed the prison of the Bastille and freed seven.. and thus began the Fnrech Revolution. Actually, it was brewing a long time before that, but that was the "kick-off". (Sorry, that image makes me thinks sports!)
Today in 1933, Germany outlawed all political parties except the Nazi Party.
In 1951, the George Washington Carver park was opened in Joplin, Missouri, the first such park to honor an African-American. Carver was an agircultural scientist and inventor and innovator, who created ways to replenish soil and find crops other than cotton to grow in the US South. He discovered 300 or more uses for peanuts, but NOT peanut butter.
PB was given to us by MG Edson. Thank you, sir!
And on that note, I'm ...hoping you are all well, sane, and facing good things! :-)
Peeps - Sorry this is late. I lost all motivation late yesterday and then had a really bad night. Pretty sure that I was awake every hour on the hour. And, at 3 AM, Smurf threw up on the bed. Naturally, I have an appointment today too.I will check back in later. I just wanted to get us started!
Hey, all! I should be back Monday morning. Till then, my cats send you Fur-iday purrs and, obvs, relaxation vibes.
